Connecting With Hekate, Goddess of Witchcraft

This post is very special to me because Hekate is the deity closest to my heart. I was initiated first by Hekate and since then I have enjoyed a walk with her that has increased my magical abilities substantially. I love the goddess and I am so blesses to be introducing you, my dear reader, to the goddess of all magic and time, Hekate.

My Personal Experience

I first met Hekate six years ago when I endured a viscous Saturn’s return. I ended a violent eight year marriage and faced homelessness hundreds of miles away from home in the snow to name a few of the things I was facing. After a red eye flight I landed in my hometown on the Gulf of Mexico where I was in the front yard of our trailer being interviewed as the city hawked at my family who was murdered and discarded like trash.

I was everything but destroyed after Saturn entered its transit of my birth the first time. I will do a post on Saturn’s Return at a later time as its very interesting to learn about and valuable to know. Here is a video of me that night standing broken in a blinding light with a broken eye to match…..

I will go into my journey in detail more in my wanderings which I plan to post regularly. Being in this position in life I faced so much darkness and pain but something in me refused to stay down. Today I can thankfully say I am doing much better but this time in my life really hurt. It really took a toll on my sole leaving a big scar.

When I was homeless one night laying in a ditch next to America’s Mountain I looked up at the moon and I made a simple promise. Feeling as if I had nothing else to live for at this point, after every failure I faced, I reached out to the moon. I promised to take a year long spiritual journey into the unknown. What did I have to lose I though……I quickly found out what there was to lose.

So in an effort to pursue that promise to the moon one night I was going to do a little ritual. Without a real purpose or plan I surrounded my self with a few items including a bowl filled with water, a few stones from the yard placed in the bowl of water, some herbs from the kitchen and some music on my headphones. I basically was just sitting there feeling the energetic presence of the spirits I surrounded myself with and waiting. Waiting on the unknown.

As the music player mixed spiritual songs for me I was starting to pick up some messages. The one that makes me chuckle looking back on was the song that came on. Oh god It moved me I loved it but when it got to the chorus it literally said don’t do exactly what I was doing! I had stones in a bowl of water as the focal point of my sloppy impromptu ritual of no true meaning. The song starts singing about not carrying stones in your bowl!

Again, I’ll post more about my personal journey for those interested in the blog. I have tons of inspiring, informative, and bizarre experiences to share with you all.

Step One To Connecting With Hekate: Learning About The Goddess Of Witchcraft

History of Hekate

At this point I must stress that we not put Hekate into any definitive box. AS you will quickly learn she will express herself in new profound ways showing you her self as the eternal shapeshifter. Hekate is many things at once but no one thing at anytime. Her nature is to complex to understand so don’t feel bad if that statement confuses you a bit.

So across time we have had manifestations including Isis, Astarte, Innana to name a few. I might put together an in depth post on the various origins of Hekate but for now its just important that you understand she has many forms over the ages. You call on the one and draw close to the one most relevant to your journey. In my case I needed her to come in a form to help me deal with all the death and sadness I had been surrounded by. That is she came to me as the goddess of the underworld, an esoteric way of saying Goddess of emotions and sadness.

So pick your most drawn to version of Hekate and learn all about her in that form. She has many names and many faces across time including Enepsigos, Innana, Isis, and Astarte to name a few. You will want to learn the history behind the name as well as practices the ancients used to honor her. Hekate has a colorful history and I will plan on looping back and making more posts on the history of the Goddess of Witchcraft, Hekate.

Hekate’s Symbols & Associations

This is perhaps the most important information you will need to learn about Hekate. You see without knowing her symbols you place a huge barrier on your communication with her. I have found that Hekate speaks mostly through a combination of her symbols and synchronicities. These can be profound experiences when they are encountered. Make sure to keep up a good mental health while you take this journey and you should be fine. Things Hekate has for you to experience will change you. I often gleam with joy when the goddess starts speaking to me with her symbols and powerful synchronicities.

Hekate with her many forms also comes with a litany of symbols, some specific to whatever version of her you are working with. I will list the most popular used symbols that I found. I think every good witch should know these symbols so we can be aware when our witch mother is beckoning our attention.

A List of Hekate’s Commonly Used Symbols

THE STROPHALOS

HEKATE’S BLACK DOGS

HEKATE’S KEYS

HEKATE’S LANTERNS

HEKATES SNAKES

HEKATE’S CROSSROADS

HEKATE’S GATES

HEKATE AND THE MOON

HEKATE AND THE NUMBER THREE- HEKATE TRIFORMIS

So to give an example of how Hekate uses her symbols to speak I will describe something I personally encountered from the goddess. She was speaking to me that night about being a shaman and what it means to truly be a hollow bone. She was urging me to empty myself and also become a hollow bone. Well I usually use Youtube Music App on auto play to receive messages from Hekate and other spirits. The song I am linking below is waht began to play on my headset. I was so moved and happy to have the goddess sending her signs to me once again.

I want to propose a challenge to you at this point…..Look at the album cover on the song above and listen to the song. It might help to be in a meditative state as you ponder the song. Listen intently and look closely at the cover……what symbols do you see or hear from Hekate? There is one symbol in particular you should find. Leave a comment below about what you think of the song and what the symbol is I think you will find in the song. Oh the colors of Hekate are red, black and white. When you see these colors in any combination you can be certain Hekate is involved and is sending you some kind of message.

If you found the last symbol then light the way to this video and tell me……what symbols of Hekate do you find within?!?!

Hekate’s Epithets

Its very important that you use epiteths when calling not only Hekate but any diety. An epiteth is a descriptive name bestowed on a specific facet of the god or goddess. Here’s an easy example, I am Zac. If there was this alter ego part of me that went to New York to do some ninja turtle stuff and save the world you could call me Zac the Brave or Zac the Superhero. Epiteths work like this too except they are titles used to describe whatever the name represents. Instead of saying Zac the Brave we might call me Sentecas meaning the brave. I hope that makes sense on some level to you.

So Hekate has a lot of names or epiteths that summon the various aspects of her divine nature. So you want to make sure the name you use matches the specific part of Hekate you want to align with. Want to cast a powerful blockbuster spell, call Hekate as the Witch Mother to bestow the power within yourself to cast these high level magical formulas. I am going a little left field here but I think you have a firm grasp of what an epithet is now. LAter, we will discuss what to do with them!

Here are some of my favorite epiteths to call on when summoning Hekate along with a link to a good source for Hekate’s epiteths online.
